What have I learnt from using Instagram?

I currently have the same relationship with Instagram as I used to have with Twitter – I think that it’s great for looking at celebrity posts, but I don’t know exactly how I can use it to promote my blog and anything else I want to say. However, like my experience with Twitter, I think that the more I use it, the more I will understand it. In the time that I have been using it, I do think that I have learnt a bit about the social media platform, which I will now share.

For years, all I knew about Instagram was that there were a lot of pretty photos on it! I also thought that I wouldn’t use it as I’m not very creative with photos, and I haven’t got a lot of imagination when it comes to posting them. However, I do think that this is a good thing as it sets it out as being different to other social media platforms, and it can still be used to express yourself, whether people talk about a photo, or anything at all that can be accompanied by some sort of visual. A post is a post after all, and it is content that is uploaded for people to view.

It seems as though on an Instagram post, the content of it is almost as important as whatever your photo or image is. When I first started using it, I read somewhere that the longer the post the better, and it seems to be the same with hashtags. I have never used so many hashtags as the amount I use on Instagram! It does seem to work though – I seem to generally get more likes on my Instagram posts, which I think is due to using hashtags, as I think this is the fastest and most direct way of people finding my posts.

So, in my experience it seems as though a good photo, good content, and good hashtags are key to making posts on Instagram. I also think that although you can comment on other posts on Instagram, your own post has potentially more of a kind of purpose than on other social media. Because you have to upload some kind of a photo or visual in a post, maybe that extra effort makes people put more effort into thinking about what they are saying in it?

I’m unsure of how far I can use Instagram to reach people but I know there is a lot of advice from other bloggers out there on how to do that very thing. One blog post even looks at how to grow your Instagram to 5000 in 5 months, and it’s resources like this which helps me think that I can’t give up trying to understand new ways of using social media to help me with my blogging experience. Instagram is just another part of my blogging journey that I can learn about, and learn I will!

Do you use Instagram? What is your experience with it? Let me know in the comments below.
